Question:
Hi. I am new here, and was thrilled to find this ng. I think you guys could help me out a lot. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for a Weight-watchers dropout. I lost 10 lbs on the plan last year, but have since gained it all back and then some. My biggest problem is that I *cannot* cook. I mean I am such a horrible cook it isn’t funny. I eat out all the time. Anyone have any advice? Thanks a bunch!! ~Kathy
Response:
Go back to the next meeting you can attend! You don’t NEED to cook. Ask your leader and members for coping ideas. We had one guy in our group who NEVER ate at home. He worked in a hotel and ate 3 meals a day there. He was wildly successful, reaching a 30 pound loss in the time most of us take for 10. (I’m convinced it’s a guy thing.) So it can be done. Putting it off will only mean you’ll rejoin later at an even higher weight! Shel in Vegas 219/168.8/141

Hi Jade and welcome to the group. You’ll get plenty of info here, you just have to ask! Here’s the welcome notice which has answers to some basic questions. Welcome to this great newsgroup where you’ll receive lots of support, advice, and encouragement. Once a week on Sundays, I post a list of links that newcomers to asdww might find useful. You may want to look for that later in the week, or do a backwards search for last Sunday’s post. At 183 pounds and based on the new US flexpoints system, you will have a set point target of 24. In addition to this you are allowed 35 flexpoints to be used throughout the week … as well as any activity points you earn on a particular day. When your weight drops to 175, your target drops to 22 points … weight reaches 150, target once again drop to 20 points. 3 servings of dairy of recommended per day, 5 servings of fruit and veggies, minimum of 6 glasses of water. To calculate food and activity points, I love this computer desktop calculator … http://www.zythra.com/downloads/points.exe The basic plan is easy. Eat at least your minimum daily number of points. Points do not carry over from day to day. You are allotted 35 weekly flexpoints to be used at your discretion … can divide them up and use daily (would be an additional 5 points per day) or save them and use them for a special occassion during the week. Activity points are earned based when exercising, but can ONLY be used on the day they are earned. If you can afford $15/month, the online ww program might be a great thing for you to look into. There is lots of information available, as well as the food point database and journaling system. Hi Pam and welcome to the WW ng
We don’t have an official weigh in day here, but we do have series of challenges, and report in weekly weights while the challenges are running eg: Last year we had a Christmas Challenge and a group of people posted their weights monthly… we ended up losing a combined total of over 800 pounds
Since new years we have had a Valentines Day Massacre Challenge… it will be ending in a week, but after that, we will do an April Fools Challenge.. so look for that one to start just after Valentines… I am not sure who is the official keeper of the weights, but details will be posted soon. The idea is, you figure out what you would like to realistically weigh by April 1, and set that as your goal. EG: the 7 week Valentine challenge, I set one pound a week as my goal… It looks as though the next challenge will run 6-7 weeks… so start thinking about how much you want to try to lose in that time.
It is a fun way to break up this weight loss journey we are all on

Hi Pam and welcome to the group. We don’t post monthly – we just post our weights weekly or whenever we weigh in and support each other daily – sometimes hourly
) Here are some hints and tips for you : *** There are lots of friendly supportive folks around here who have a really good idea of what you’re going through. We’re definitely here to help! Here are some tips that might help you stay motivated and keep on track. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! ****** 1. Drink lots of water.. I mean at least 8 – 8 0z glasses a day PLUS a glass of water for every 25 pounds overweight you are. I weigh 220 and I am drinking 100 OZ of water a day. For information on WHY you need the water… read this article, it is chalk full of good reasons. This is written by a fellow ASDer, Claudia, and is excellent. http://dietchef.ecorp.net/articles/health/water.htm 2. Here on the ASDWW NG, we play a game to help each other out. Every time someone mentions the word "water" in a post, you take a swill from your water glass! This helps everyone remember to get all their water in. You are invited to participate.
3. LEARN all you can about the importance of getting to your desired weight.. Whatever way of eating you do, learn all about it. I do Weight Watchers, I learned about WW and am making it my life’s journey. That is what we on the WW NG are doing.. so join us! There is a great website that I like to tell people about built and written by a fellow WW member… she has filled her website with GREAT ideas, tips, ways she lost, before and after pics… I highly recommend you click on this link and look around. I go there for inspiration and motivation. I love this site..
http://www.dottisweightlosszone.com/mystory.html 4. Exercise!! The BEST way to speed up your weight loss, is to add regular exercise to your lifestyle (wol = way of living). SHAKE IT UP… eg: do gym cardio one day.. on alternate days do… walk, hike, dance like a fool in your living room.. don’t let your body have the chance to get used to what you are doing.
) You need to trick it, as your body can adapt and that is where you reach plateaus. :) Some of us on the WW NG have joined Destination 2000… there is a website dedicated to this if you are interested in setting exercise goals for yourself… http://www.geocities.com/mystic1972/index.htm 5. Snack during the day using healthy foods. There are a lot of good ideas on here to be had, keep your eyes open. Junk food binges usually happen because your body has had an insulin spike after a meal, and if you satisfy that craving or urge to eat, put something good in your tummy instead of junk… by eating junk food… you slide back, your exercise will have been for nothing, as you are giving your body more fat to store.
MAKE YOUR EXERCISE COUNT!! Nothing tastes as good as slim feels REMEMBER THAT.
) Joanie’s Dr. recommends chromium for cravings.. the doctor said that if she takes one with the main meal, it will help to even out your blood sugar level, and thereby prevents cravings. 6. Ask yourself why you want to lose weight? Make a list of the reasons you have to lose… put them in one column…. then ask yourself why you should not lose weight, put those reasons in the other column. I think you will find that you have every reason on earth to get healthy. Many of us were not taught the right way to eat. (we grew up on hamburger helper… you just don’t know how many ways there are to serve it.. ) I don’t blame my mum, as she didn’t’ know better… but in this day and age, where information is at our fingertips… make it your business to learn about all of this!
7. Eat breakfast! It will help you to have energy during the day, and prevent cravings mid morning and lunch time. It also helps your metabolism as your body doesn’t go into starvation mode… and slow your metabolism. Also, if you are having difficulties making your minimum points for the day, adding a few extra points for breakfast is a great way to make sure you’re eating enough! 8. Set minigoals for yourself… how about setting your goal to lose 5 pounds… and that is ALL you have to think about… getting down 5 pounds! . Once you reach that, you set a new number…
It helps to say "I have 5 pounds to lose!" I can do that!!! Rather than saying I have 125 pounds (like me) to lose UGH! 9. Dont’ be in a rush for it all to happen at once…. it took a long time to put the weight on, it won’t come off in a week or two.
Patience. You have a lifetime to get this right, there is no hurry. 10. Get the FAQ’s ma’am! ASDWW FAQ: http://www.didian.com/asdww/ This is the faq made up for asdww by Cindy now maintained by Diane. Thanks! It is a list of commonly asked questions here on WW ASD. 11. this is where you can find the list of some of the regulars you will see on this NG
http://aclancy.home.mindspring.com/WW/ ****** 12. We on the NG have a website
It has a chat room, and a message area, and we are starting up a clothing swap. So come have a look at http://members.home.net/joanie-55 ****** Hope some of this helps! *** Today is the tomorrow you dreamed about yesterday. Good luck – — ~ ~ Rocki ~ ~ S. You DO however need to make sure that you are eating at your normal Flex plan target number of points. This can be difficult for some and you WILL stop losing. Here is the summary of the plan: http://ahwww.home.comcast.net/summary.htm Here is the detail list of foods: http://ahwww.home.comcast.net/wwcoreplan.htm Basic rules: 1. Eat as much of the core foods as you need to feel "satisfied" (not full). 2. If you want to eat foods that are not on the core foods list use you 35 weekly points allowance (WPA). Note: use these points on healthy foods and not junk. 3. Activity points are used to supplement the 35 WPA for Non-core food items only. They must be used on the day they are earned. Note: most people find that they will increase the amount of core foods because they are hungrier due to exercising. 4. 2 teaspoons of heathy oil daily is required. ~Laura Please note that if you live in onther countries (UK, Australia, NZ, Europe), the Points plans are different. Also, since I have 2 small children and will be returning to work in 3 weeks, going to meetings will be difficult. I was looking to join online. I looked at the WW website, and it didn’t go into much detail about how their online program works. How do you weigh in–go to a local meeting for that? Has anyone here done the online program and what was your opinion about it? Any assistance or advice is appreciated! I was also cleared by the OB yesterday to start exercising again, so I’m looking to get this ball rolling! Thanks! — lisa

Thansk for the encouragement. I have struglled with different plans for a while, but I have never tried weight watchers. I did low carb, but became anemic because of it. Imagine that, eat all the meat you want and I became anemic, but I did not get to eat my beans and peas, which apparently I got my iron from. pam

Hello everyone. I am new here but have been lurking for a few weeks. I joined WW 3 weeks ago and just love it. I have a 10 week old little girl and really needed to do something about the weight gain as soon as possible. I am breast feeding and have the 10 extra points. Although the weight is coming off slowly it is coming off and I have only had losses so far. I also quit smoking when I found out I was PG so some of the gain is from that … either way I’m still carrying it around. I have alot to lose, and for someone like me who hasn’t really struggled with my weight before it seems very overwhelming at times looking at the numbers. I just love reading the NG and find it to be a good support and motivator. I am drinking my liters of water everyday, but have trouble with the exercice, mostly because I live in Vancouver BC and the weather isn’t that great … although it beautiful today. Any suggestions on Videos? I have the "buns of steel" series but that is just way too intense for me right now. ( I get winded just looking at the video case!) I’m looking for something that is a good workout (low impact) but that I can get through just the same. Thanks Mares 195/191/136

Welcome to the group! I like the walking, but when the weather is bad I use my stepper (just a wooden step that a friend built for me for free). It is more intense than walking, but you can go at your own pace while listening to music or watching TV. I have found that since I’ve been walking, the stepper has gotten a lot easier than it used to be. — Anya 201/187.5/185 minigoal Goal 124 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello everyone. I’m looking for something that is a good workout (low impact) but that I can get through just the same. Thanks Mares 195/191/136

Welcome Mares ! Personally, I like walking as a low impact exercise. I also have the Steel videos, I don’t do the aerobic portion anymore but fast forward it to the leg exercises, I think those are terrific and work ! So maybe use walking as your cardio then come home and do the floor exercises ?

| Hello everyone. I am new here but have been lurking for a few weeks. I | joined WW 3 weeks ago and just love it. I have a 10 week old little | girl and really needed to do something about the weight gain as soon as | possible. I am breast feeding and have the 10 extra points. Although | the weight is coming off slowly it is coming off and I have only had | losses so far. I also quit smoking when I found out I was PG so some of | the gain is from that … either way I’m still carrying it around. | I have alot to lose, and for someone like me who hasn’t really struggled | with my weight before it seems very overwhelming at times looking at the | numbers. Welcome Mares! I hope you can stay smoke-free; it’s so good for you! Don’t worry about the end goal. First, just concentrate on losing the first five pounds, then the next five pounds. That’s been working well for me. Have fun! LW "The world is wide, and I will not waste my life in friction when it could be turned into momentum." — Frances Willard 234
