Too Small
Question:
: Hello Everyone I am new to this group and have read many of your posts : regarding the derisability of breastfeeding. This is something that I would : want to do when I get married, I am still single. However I have one major : concern. I am very small breasted, meaning that I am totally flat. Many : people particularly some of my more normally developed friends tell me that I : will not be able to breastfeed. Some of the posts heree and the alt.. forum : would lead me to believe that is not the truth. Is this true and is there : anyone else in the same situation. I am 20 years old so I don’t think growth : will occur in the future. Is this something I should worry about. Jennifer Bah. I’ve got two pearls for you. I was flat, i mean ___flat___ until i was 23. All of a sudden, i got two very small breasts. It seemed a bit old, but, well, call me a late bloomer. When I was pregnant with my daughter, my breasts remained the same wee size. I watched all my other pregnant friends develop big breasts, and I became concerned that, while I would be able to breastfeed, i might win a record for smallest milk-filled breats. Then six days after my daughter was born, i went from a AA bra to a C-cup. In the matter of hours, i had huge, absolutely indecent, breasts. It was very cool. Finally, i looked like a mother. And, size does not count. You have all of the appropriate equipment tucked safely away to breastfeed properly. Don’t worry about it! Your carrying cases are just a bit more compact. -Charlotte
Response:
Yes, you will be able to breastfeed. You would not believet he people who think that some women cannot bf because they are too big, too small, allergic to their own milk, all kinds of things. Your body will work. Good for you on planning to bf! Jennifer: I just wanted to add that generally speaking, a larger breast has more *fat* tissue — not more "breast-feeding equipment". Some small breasted women do not increase much in size when their milk comes in, some do. Some large breasted women do not increase much in size when their milk comes in, some do. Breast size is totally irrelevant to being able to breastfeed. Like Charlotte said, don’t worry about it. Mary mother to Lili (5-3-95), Jenny (9-21-97), and ???, (2/14/99)

Hi I’m new to this group too, but having bf my first child I am now about to qualify as a breastfeeding counsellor. Breast size has no relation to the amount of milk you will be able to produce. This is determined by the number of milk ducts in your breast and optimal positioning of the baby (I steer away from the term ‘correct positioning’ as it implies failure if positioning is not perfect and we all know of babies who feed beautifully with appalling positioning) Having large breasts only means you store a lot of fat in that area. Good luck when the time comes.

I was an AA I think (I never wore a bra). I had a serious inferiority complex about my breasts. I have always had a great supply of milk and I have tandem nursed two babies with no supply problems. The unexpected benefit is that I have a new found pride in my breasts which has nothing to do with their appearance. My breasts are amazing and super efficient, and I have two wonderfull babies who would attest to that!! michaela — — Michaela Brown, Software Development Engineer

Thank You everybody. I am truly grateful for all of the encouragement about being able to breastfeed. Not only have you reinforced what I believed to be true but was made to doubt by comments and remarks but you have also let me know that I am not the only very flat chested person out there. It was also very encouraging to hear from A/AA/AAA sized women, I fall in the latter category. Anyone else who has encouraging words, please post. Jennifer

My, my, my isn’t this culture of ours obsessed with breast size?! The size of your breasts, as far as I know, has nothing to do with the amount of glandular tissue in them (breastfeeding apparatus) and everything to do with the amount of fatty tissue in them (dead weight). I was small also before I got pregnant, an A cup to be exact. I have had no problems bfing my daughter. During my pregnancy, I went up to a C cup, so yours may get bigger too, but even if they don’t (not everyone’s do) I don’t think it will pose a problem. Satisfaction for babies comes in all shapes and sizes. Jennifer, mommy to Meaghan 09Apr98

Hi
I am breastfeeding my baby, and it is going very well. Before I was a mommy, I was an A cup (barely), but I am still able to breastfeed and have always heard that it didn’t matter what size you are. On the bright side, I am now a very full B cup, which is a nice size I think. My friends who were always bigger than me have become double D’s, and wish they were my size. My new outlook on my chest: Hey, they are milkers, and darn good ones at that!
It makes you proud.
Hope I helped!

Dont worry Jennifer- I am "flat-chested" too- but still breastfeeding my 14 month old- he weighs 30 pounds!! Women who have large breast do not have more milk, but more fatty adipose tissue! Your breast will enlargen during pregnancy and even more after the birth- I personally love it! Tonya

How great that you are thinking ahead about this! Breast size is determined by the amount of fat tissue stored in the breast–not by the amount of glandular tissue, which is what makes the milk. In fact, the only woman I know who cannot breastfeed due to lack of sufficient glandular tissue has fairly large breasts. I am extremely small busted (meaning I don’t even fill an aa-cup bra when I’m not nursing), but my 6-month old is completely breastfed, no solids yet, and he weighs over 18 lbs–so I clearly make enough!
