baby food

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi. My son (7 months) has been eating baby food for quite some time now. I was just watching a home video from May when he started rice cereal. He’s an old pro. He had his first "cookie" today, one of those biter bisquit things from Gerber. My DH and I were wondering when kids start eating normal food. I do not mean fresh food that has been strained or pureed one at a time. But at what point do you cease being anal about introducing one new food, etc.? The reason I ask is that we thought it would be interesting to have the food processor take up permanent residence on our counter and just blend the snot out of whatever we are having for dinner, minus the dairy. Of course there would be some things that we would not do this with. I am not sure he would like my Thai red curry, for instance! There are a lot of ingredients in a standard dinner. We would be adding a lot to his diet, like spices and stuff. I use mostly fresh ingredients rather than packaged food and never cook with salt. Hmmm… If he’s doing well with a wide variety of foods, I’d say just avoid things that have much salt (babies can’t take much) or are too greasy (hard on little tummies) or are likely allergens, and go for it.

Having decided it was OK, guess what we had for dinner last night? Store bought stuffed chicken plops and tater tots. Oi! Grease? Salt??? We did not share that with my son! Thanks for all the input, all. I would go ahead.  I did this with my kid (I was *really* anal until about 9 months, and then I figured that it wouldn’t hurt to try him on some new stuff).  He was quite happy with it.  There were some "I don’t think so" dishes and a whole lot of "this is the coolest stuff I’ve ever eaten-I must have more!".   And, he did make the cutest faces.  Just start with it on nights that you’re having something easy on the tummy and work your way up. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

If you’ve gone through the introduction of new baby foods and had no problems, I see no reason why you can’t introduce him to table foods.  My dd was eating bits off our plates at 8 months.  She preferred it over the bland baby foods.  I’d watch things that may be too spicy or greasy, but other than that, if he’s not had problems with allergies, try a few things and see how he reacts :)  It can be so much fun to watch their expression when they try a new taste. — ~Nan~ Did you click today? http://www.Breastcancersite.com

we started ours on table food at 6  mos — obviously selectively — and we used a baby food mill at first for some things — but at 6 mos they are past the need for finely pureed food for the most part and can start with just a bit of texture — might as well get them used to what the family eats from the beginning.  we did use baby foods for convenience when traveling and also to augment our own meals or to substitute for things not appropriate — but about 75% of what they ate from the beginning was what we ate.

I happen to love banana baby food but I recently started to eat it on a regular basis. I figured if babies can digest it, so can I. So far so good. Right now it is probably the only thing, besides jello, that is staying in me. My mom’s friend who is a nurse said that I am actually getting the same nutrients as a baby so it is good since if I didn’t eat it I wouldn’t be getting any, or very little. She told me it is fine to eat it, but just not make that the only thing I eat. Terri S **Sometimes the only sense we have is a sense of humor.   :) Take out "Nospam" and

Thoughts on baby food for IBD patients in flare: – it is comparably easy to digest – nutrients are there – it is an enjoyable change from Boost or Ensure – not unlike the soups I get in the hospital when on full fluid diet – need to watch for certain carbohydrates and additives that can make you feel worse – what about making your own if you are well enough?  use lovely organic veggies and fruit – how about trying some home made juice too? – you could also consider some strained home-made soup (not as hard as you might think) — Jason Smith

Response:

I find that baby food veggies are the only veggies I can eat.  At least I get the vitamins without the fiber. Paty
